The course may take place either in the classroom or at visits to galleries, studios and elsewhere where it is possible to study original artifacts. It involves treatment of specific chapters, for which students are encouraged to write papers or make some other kind of active contribution. The content changes each year and among others the course deals with: issues of Realism, Impressionism, Symbolism and Expressionism in Slovene arts; art avantguards; sources and forms of abstract art in Slovenia; the relationship between visual art and literature; the relationship between art and its patron or buyer; the relationship between art history and criticism; monographic presentations of central or overlooked artists; opportunities and ways of interpretation of the portrait and landscape painting in the 19th century; methodological approaches in the Slovenian art history, etc.

In the addition to the above, the course uses various general art overviews in the form of books or articles (example: Umetnost na Slovenskem; Od prazgodovine do danes, ur. Irena Trenc-Frelih, Ljubljana: Mladinska knjiga 1998). We also regularly use various monographic catalogues or articles on individual artists or topics.
The basic literature is adapted to the respective topic and communicated during lectures.
