The course is divided into the following three units:
a) English Grammar 1
b) English Phonetics for Translators and Interpreters
c) English Language and Translation 1

English Grammar 1:
Students gain familiarity with the rules of grammatical construction and the relationships between the constituents of a sentence. The course focuses on three levels of description: phrase structure, clause structure and sentence structure. Students also gain familiarity with the basic concepts connected with the verb and the verb phrase. The importance of grammatical structure in translation is highlighted.
English Phonetics for Translators and Interpreters:
The students gain familiarity with the fundamentals of English phonetics and phonology, the standard pronunciation of English (NRP), the features of the English vowels and consonants, as well as the word stress and prosodic features of the English language.

English Language and Translation 1:
Speaking: pairwork, group discussion. Reading: working with original texts, comprehension exercises. Listening: working with audio texts, comprehension exercise. The focus is on general and specialised vocabulary building, collocations, idioms, phrasal verbs etc., and identification of Slovene translation equivalents and a contrastive approach. Additional emphasis will be put on developing higher-level reading skills and rewriting of different types of source texts as well as translation.
