Students are trained for adequate and reliable translation of general non-literary texts from English into Slovene. Students learn to use dictionaries and other resources for translation work. Students learn to view translating as a norm-governed linguistic activity, taking into account a broad intercultural context. They are expected to recognize the usefulness of translation for both improving their language skills and teaching English as a foreign language. In class, students present their thematically diverse translation assignments, compare them (with regard to the pragmatic framework, discourse features, lexical nuances, stylistic level) and verify their adequacy, discussing various solutions and resources used in translating (dictionaries, encyclopaedias, the Internet, parallel texts). Due to the emphasis placed on translation from English into their mother tongue, selected topics of Slovene-English contrastive analysis are also discussed, especially at the levels of syntax and co-text.
