Hittite from a synchronic perspective: in the tutorial, students familiarize themselves with Hittite descriptive grammar and the historical development of Hittite by reading (initially) simple transliterated texts. They get to know the basic features of non–Indo-European languages of the Middle East (Sumerian, Akkadian, Hurrian, and Proto-Hattic).
Hittite from a diachronic perspective: Hittite as an Indo-European language (Knudtzon, Hrozný). The characteristics of the Hittite grammatical system and its differences compared to the grammatical system of classical Indo-European languages (Sanskrit and Greek) and the issue of reconstruction of Proto-Indo-European; the Indo-Hittite theory (Sturtevant et al.). Three functions of cuneiform symbols. The phonological value of cuneiform symbols and inscriptions (the type pí-e-ra-an / pí-ra-an; plene writing, prothetic vowels, mute/written vowels). The issue of single/double intervocalic C (Sturtevant’s law and its application to the reflexes of PIE *s and *H2, pre-Anatolian lenition). Assibilation.
